State highway agencies are adopting High Performance Concrete (HPC) for bridge construction and rehabilitation due to its enhanced strength and durability. While HPC utilizes the same foundational materials as standard concrete, its mix design is tailored to the unique requirements of each project. MnDOT took a significant step forward by selecting the I-694 bridge deck over TH-5 as the first state project to employ contractor-designed HPC mixes under performance-based specifications. AVR partnered with Lunda Construction to develop a custom HPC mix that improved placement and workability while meeting the strict performance standards set by MnDOT.
